The Heart of Discernment: Navigating Life with Spiritual Intelligence
The Gentle Power of Knowing
There’s a quiet strength that resides in the heart—a steady pulse of truth guiding us when our minds grow loud and the world feels overwhelming. This is the essence of spiritual discernment. Unlike judgment, which slices through experience with the ego’s blade, discernment listens. It doesn’t leap to conclusions; it lingers, feels, and observes. It’s the subtle art of tuning into your soul’s frequency.
Where judgment builds walls, discernment opens doors. As we’ve explored in The Sacred Pause and From Reaction to Creation, dropping beneath the noise allows us to anchor into something deeper, wiser, and more enduring: our spiritual intelligence.
Understanding Discernment vs. Judgment
Discernment arises from presence. It flows from a centered awareness that sees things clearly—without the distortions of fear, preference, or ego. It doesn’t “know” in a purely intellectual sense; it simply recognizes.
Judgment, on the other hand, springs from separation. It labels, categorizes, and condemns, driven by the mind’s urgent need to control or protect. The Dao De Jing offers a beautiful reflection:
"The still is the master of the restless."
In that stillness, true discernment takes root. Through the Awakening Awareness course, we learned to notice what drains our energy and when we feel most at peace—clues that reveal where judgment lurks and where the grace of discernment shines.
The Anatomy of Spiritual Discernment
At its core, discernment is guided by the Higher Self—that timeless part of you never lost in panic or hurry. It speaks in whispers, symbols, and bodily sensations rather than in shouts.
The Zohar tells us that when the soul aligns with Divine Light, clarity naturally emerges. It isn’t forced; it is unveiled. Much like Entura Art, which channels unseen wisdom through color and form, discernment bypasses logic and ego to arrive at an ancient yet immediate knowing.
With practice, our vibrational field shifts. We resonate more coherently, aligning our energy with truth so that life flows more effortlessly.
Tuning into the Heart’s Wisdom
How do we access this sacred knowing?
Begin with breath.
Take Just One Breath — a practice from Awakening Awareness. Pause whatever you’re doing, and bring your full attention to one intentional inhale and exhale.
Use journaling prompts.
Gently ask, “What does my heart know about this?” and let your pen flow without censoring.
Try Entura-inspired meditation.
Close your eyes, doodle or draw intuitively, and allow your subconscious to guide the lines.
The heart carries the frequency of unity; it doesn’t argue—it simply knows. For deeper self-love practices that support discernment, revisit Embodying Self-Love.
Making Soul-Aligned Choices
Every day offers countless crossroads. What guides your steps?
Discernment follows a simple rhythm:
- Pause and feel. Remember The Sacred Pause.
- Ask your heart, “Is this aligned with my highest good?”
- Sense the resonance. Does this choice feel like expansion or constriction?
In Bye-Bye Self-Sabotage, Drs. Latz and Ross likened intention and thought to a bow and arrow: your intention draws the arrow, and your thought releases it. When choices spring from the heart, the arrow flies true; when driven by fear, it misses the mark. Soul-aligned decisions may defy conventional logic, but they always feel right.
Discernment in Everyday Life
In Relationships: Instead of reacting to someone’s behavior, ask, “What is mine, and what is theirs?” Release the urge to fix others, and allow them their own journey.
In Career: Seek opportunities that spark joy, not merely status. Fulfillment grows from truth, not titles.
In Spiritual Practice: Discernment helps you sift through teachings—embracing what resonates and gently setting aside what doesn’t. As Awareness as Medicine taught, your body and emotions are powerful barometers of alignment.
In every moment, discernment invites you to listen deeply and trust your inner compass.
Conclusion: Living from the Heart of Discernment
Discernment isn’t about perfection—it’s about presence. It’s the ongoing practice of returning to your heart’s wisdom, again and again.
To live from discernment is to move in harmony with life’s natural rhythm instead of wrestling it into submission. When doubt arises, remember:
"In stillness, the heart speaks."
